Govt Deploys 36 Ambulances to JKIA for Raila's Reception

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has deployed 36 ambulances to aid in the reception of Raila Odinga's body at the Jomo Kenyatta National Hospital.

"In a statement moments after the body landed at 9:30am, the Medical Services Principal Secretary, Dr Ouma Oluga, announced that each of the ambulances were equipped with both basic and advanced life-saving support.

"The Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, has announced the mobilisation of thirty-six (36) ambulances to provide emergency medical coverage during the reception of the body of the Late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on October 16, 2025," the statement read in part.

"Dr. Oluga noted that each ambulance is fully equipped with Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) facilities and staffed with a paramedic, nurse, and driver, ensuring effective on-site emergency response and safe patient evacuation when necessary."

Of the 36 ambulances, 20 belong to the Kenya Red Cross, four to the St. John Ambulance, three to the Nairobi Disaster Service, eight to Nairobi Emergency Services one to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Another Port Health ambulance will also remain on standby at JKIA to provide supplementary medical support and coordinate with other responding teams.

The Ministry further announced that it was in the process of mobilising efforts to ensure full emergency medical coverage in Kisumu and Siaya Counties as national arrangements continue.

In a subsequent communication, the Kenya Red Cross announced that its team had arrived at the airport to offer any support, including mental health support to mourners.

"Following the arrival of the body of the late former Prime Minister, the Kenya Red Cross response and mental health teams are on standby to provide much-needed humanitarian and psychosocial support," Red Cross stated.

"We continue to work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all."

The body will proceed to the Parliament buildings, where it will lie for public viewing from 12 noon to 5pm before an overnight stay at Lee Funeral Home.

He will be accorded a state funeral at the Nyayo Stadium on Friday, starting at 9am. The day has been set aside as a public holiday to honour him.

The body will then stay at his Karen home overnight and then proceed to Kisumu on Saturday for another public viewing at Moi Stadium before leaving for Bondo by road at 3pm.

He will be buried on Sunday at his family’s graveyard in Kango Ka Jaramogi, beside his late son Fidel and his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
