Opposition leaders led by Democracy for the People's Party (DCP) Deputy leader Cleophas Malala have taken a swipe at President William Ruto, accusing him of relaunching Uhuru Kenyatta-era projects.

Addressing the press on Thursday afternoon, Malala criticised the Head of State, accusing him of re-commissioning roads previously commissioned by his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Malala revealed that it was the third time Ruto was launching the same road in Malava, Kakamega County, having already launched the project twice, first when he was Uhuru's deputy and then again a year after taking office.

"There is a man who has come to launch Roads in Malava, the same road they are launching today. He previously came to launch it while he was with Uhuru Kenyatta and again when I was his party Secretary General," said Malala.

The DCP principal maintained that it was a mandatory responsibility of the government to construct roads for its citizens.

He added that Kakamega residents, just like other Kenyans, also paid taxes and that it was their right to enjoy the benefits of their contributions.

"We want roads in roads, and building roads in Malava is our Constitutional right and not a favour because Malava people are among Kenyans who pay the highest taxes in the country," the DCP leader stated.

"You can construct roads, but the people of Malava are the ones who know who they will vote for in the next general elections," he added.

Ruto in Western

Malala's comments come hours after President Ruto formally began his four-day Western Kenya tour. His first stop was in Butere, where he commissioned the new 124-bed Butere County Hospital.

He also launched the Malava–Samitsi–Navakholo Road, a critical infrastructure development project expected to enhance mobility and trade across Kakamega County.

While addressing the presidents of Kakamega during his tour, the Head of State called out the opposition, accusing them of running divisive politics instead of championing development.

He emphasised that the country's transformation did not lie in mere rhetoric but rather in visionary leaders who are focused on uniting Kenyans.
