From Mau Summit Expressway to Nairobi-Thika Expressway: List of Govt's Multibillion-Shilling Major Road Projects

President William Ruto, during the 62nd Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, December 12, announced the government's plan to construct a 60-kilometre expressway from Nairobi City to Thika town in Kiambu County.

He revealed that the highway would begin near the existing Nairobi Expressway at the Museum Hill interchange and end in Thika town.

Construction is expected to begin in 2026, and the new expressway is intended to complement the existing Thika Superhighway by alleviating traffic congestion.

This is just the latest in a series of major road projects by the government, including multibillion-shilling projects that are already under construction or which Ruto has promised to deliver during his term in office.

 Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Expressway

This mega road project which incorporates the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Road (A8) and the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha Road was launched by President Ruto launched on November 28, 2025, in Kiambu County.

The highway project comprises two sections: the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Road, which spans 175 kilometres, and the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha Road, which extends for an additional 58 kilometres. 

According to the plan, both corridors will be modernised into multi-lane dual carriageways.

Mombasa Road-Uhuru Highway-Waiyaki Road

During this year's Mashujaa Day celebrations on Friday, 12 December, Ruto announced plans to upgrade the existing highway connecting Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and ABC Point via Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way.

According to the head of state, the upgrade will include beautifying the road to bring it up to the same standard as the concurrent Expressway.

Ruto also emphasised that renovating the road was crucial to easing congestion.

Isiolo-Mandera Highway

On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) revealed plans to begin construction of the second phase of a 70-kilometre Modogashe-Samatar route.

The third phase, a 76-kilometre Rhamu-Madera route, forms part of the 750-kilometre highway.

This followed the near completion of the first phase of the road, the 195-kilometre Isiolo–Modogashe route, whose construction began in May this year and is expected to be completed at the start of next year.

The World Bank's International Development Association disbursed an initial of Ksh81 billion for the commencement of the road network.

Kakamega Airstrip–Shinyalu–Chepsonoi road

The President, on October 30, 2025, launched the upgrade of the 19-kilometre Kakamega Airstrip–Shinyalu– Chepsonoi (B12) Road, a corridor linking Kakamega and Nandi counties.

He also officially commissioned the 34-kilometre Turbo–Sikhendu Road in Lugari, Kakamega County, valued at Ksh 3.6 billion.

Rusinga Ring Road

Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA)on December 9, 2025, completed the Ksh1.3 billion project, 19km Rusinga Ring Road, which was the first ever tarmacked road on the Island, poised to reshape the economic outlook of Rusinga Island.
