Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has threatened to sack non-performing county officials and other workers in a bid to improve governance in the county.

Speaking during a public address on Tuesday, December 16, the county boss said that county workers should leverage the available resources to ensure that they execute their mandate effectively, to avoid being sacked.

The governor affirmed that strong performance among county officers is essential for the county government to effectively serve the people of Machakos County.

"Let me make it very clear that failure is not an option in this administration. Where performance is unsatisfactory, I will not hesitate to take collective action, including replacing non-performers, because at the end of the day, we are answerable to the people of Machakos," Ndeti stated.

"We must also recognise that resources are limited; however, limited resources are not an excuse for poor services, our duty is to deliver the best possible outcomes with what is available," she added.

The announcement comes a week after the governor also announced a crackdown on county workers who are misusing resources meant for the county government.

In a statement on December 9, Ndeti said that some county drivers have been unlawfully selling vehicle fuel meant for trucks used for garbage collection.

According to the governor, some county workers have also gone further to take money collected from garbage collection for their own benefit.

If the county workers fail to refrain from the habit, the county government shall ensure that legal action is taken against them, according to the governor.

The county chief noted that such acts are crippling the county government's ability to streamline vital services, such as medical services.

"County investigations have uncovered the misuse of fuel meant for waste collection, disrupting services and putting public health at risk. The practice will not be tolerated, and those involved will face firm legal action," Ndeti stated.

"All waste must be taken to designated dumping sites, and officers who cannot comply are expected to step aside," she added.
