The Ministry of Health has issued a public health advisory to Kenyans, warning of an increase in the possibility of the spread of contagious diseases during this festive season.
Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, on Sunday, December 21, noted that festivities are always marked by situations that make it easier for diseases to spread.
She disclosed that increased travel, social gatherings, and crowding during the festive celebrations always raise the risk of infectious disease transmission.
Muthoni also cautioned Kenyans against sharing food, utensils, and personal items, travelling frequently to new environments, and being unhygienic.
According to the PS, to reduce the risk of disease spread, Kenyans should exercise preventive measures such as maintaining good hygiene by washing hands regularly or using hand sanitisers.
Kenyans were also advised to always cover coughs and sneezes and to avoid touching their faces. "Do not attend events if you have a fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhoea; seek care early if symptoms worsen," the PS said.
"Prefer outdoor and well-ventilated venues, avoid overcrowding and limit duration. Avoid sharing utensils such as cups or bottles, and wash your hands before food handling," she added.
Additionally, members of the public were advised to exercise extra precautions around older adults, young children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses.
To further prevent the spread of contagious diseases, PS Muthoni called on Kenyans to keep recommended vaccines up to date and follow local guidance.
"Responsible celebration protects individuals, families, and the wider community through simple preventive actions," the PS reiterated.
The advisory comes amid an increase in the movement of people, a situation which health officials said poses a huge public health risk and increases the rate of disease spread.
The festive season in Kenya, which mainly occurs in December, is always marked by frequent movements as people travel to reunite with family members and friends and also recharge.
