National Transport and Safety Authority Vows to Continue With Crackdowns

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has vowed to continue nabbing drivers who will be under the influence of alcohol despite a court order barring them from doing so.

The authority that ensures sanity on the roads has issued a statement that it will not relent on its mandate to maintain safety on the roads.

NTSA Director General Francis Meja said they will remain steadfast in their course and drunk drivers will still be caught.

“We will continue with our operations as before. We do not target pubs, we test people on the road,” he remarked.

The authority also cleared the air on the Court of Appeal ruling on the illegality of breathalysers by stating that it was not barred from taming irresponsible drivers.

“As a country we really must make hard decisions. It is very unfortunate that the people pushing this agenda do not have the interests of Kenyans at heart.

"What they are interested in is their money. That they can serve you alcohol and whatever happens to you after that is none of their business,” he added.

Meja further revealed that the court asked NTSA to provide witnesses in cases against rogue drivers to substantiate their accusations.

Officials of the safety authority were pelted with stones as they carried out their duties and the drivers who had been caught were released on grounds that the crackdown was illegal.
