The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of rain and significantly colder-than-normal nights over the next five days for Nairobi and several other parts of the country.

In its latest update on Monday evening, the department highlighted that nighttime temperatures in Nairobi County and surrounding highland counties—Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi—could drop as low as 7°C, with occasional light showers expected at night.

Daytime weather in these counties is forecast to be mostly cloudy with passing light rains, breaking into sunny spells until midday or early afternoon. Afternoon and night showers will also be possible for the whole week.

Despite the cool nights, daytime temperatures are expected to warm up to around 25°C across the Eastern Highlands of the Rift Valley.

In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the central Rift Valley, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira, morning conditions between Wednesday and Saturday are expected to feature occasional rainfall. These will be interspersed with sunny intervals, especially in the morning hours.

Afternoon and evening hours will likely see increased cloud buildup, resulting in showers and thunderstorms over a few places

In the South-Eastern Lowlands, covering Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and the inland parts of Tana River, the mornings will start off cloudy but will gradually clear to allow for sunny intervals in the afternoon. This pattern is expected to persist from Wednesday through Saturday, offering mostly dry weather conditions with clouds at night.

Afternoons in these lowland regions will remain dry with extended periods of sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Night conditions will be partly cloudy, with minimum temperatures averaging 10°C, while daytime highs are projected to reach up to 31°C across most areas.

In the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as the coastal parts of Tana River County, residents will experience showers in the morning, afternoon, and night. Despite the intermittent rainfall, temperatures will remain relatively warm, with minimums around 21°C and daytime highs reaching up to 31°C throughout the week.

In the North-Western region that includes Turkana and Samburu Counties, the weather will remain largely dry, with predominantly sunny conditions during the day and partial cloud cover at night. However, rain is expected on Friday afternoon.

However, despite the sunny conditions, residents should brace for sharp temperature contrasts—daytime highs could rise to 37°C while nighttime lows may dip to as low as 7°C.

The North-Eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo will similarly experience long sunny spells during the day. Morning conditions will be dry with sunny intervals, but weather experts have not ruled out the possibility of isolated rain showers on Wednesday afternoon.

While the western and central Rift Valley regions will experience intermittent showers, the north and southeastern parts of Kenya are expected to remain largely dry and sunny, with only brief and localised weather disturbances mid-week.
