A day after the government directed all millers to sell maize flour at Sh47 for a 1kg bag and Sh90 for a 2kg packet, most supermarkets had stocked the subsidised maize flour on Wednesday but with a limitation of two packets per consumer.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a procurement officer at Tuskys Supermarket revealed that the supplies were not enough.
"We want to make sure that each family has something to cook because we serve the common Mwananchi so we are advising our customers to purchase a maximum of two packets so that it will be enough for everybody," the officer highlighted.
"It is not only us who are practising that, even other suppliers are doing the same," another staff member from the supermarket revealed.
The new prices were announced on Tuesday after the government imported 30,000 tonnes of maize, supposedly from Mexico, to help contain the escalating prices of maize flour in the country.
The shortage of maize had raised the cost of flour to an all-time high of Sh189 per 2kg packet, with a 90kg bag of maize selling at Sh4,500.
