Education CS Fred Matiang’i Reveals Schools Will Close for 2 Weeks in August Over Elections

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i  has disclosed that the school calendar would be disrupted in August to pave way for the General Election.

Speaking at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) on Friday, CS Matiang’i revealed that the ministry was considering closing all schools and Universities for two weeks.

Matiang’i stated that the closure was meant to give room for elections to be conducted and protect students as well as property during the electioneering period.

He called on school heads across the country to take an inventory of the properties that will be handed over to the IEBC in order to keep track of them during and after the polls.

This, he said would ensure that the IEBC officials would be held into account incase of destruction or loss of school property.

The CS also called on the IEBC to declare all Primary, Secondary schools,  and higher institutions of learning that are expected to serve as voting centres so that the ministry can streamline itself to the needs by the commission.

Matiang’i made the remarks as he received the report by a task force formed to probe into the cause of school fires that plagued schools last year.
