Chebet Lesan Wins Queen’s Young Leaders Award, Set to Meet Queen Elizabeth II

When 27-year old Chebet Lesan ventured into charcoal making a few years ago, she did not imagine that her venture would win her an award and a date with the Queen Elizabeth II.

While in Tanzania for work, Lesan was alarmed by the rate of deforestation as the appetite for charcoal grew.

Upon returning to Kenya, she established BrighGreen Renewable Energy, a social enterprise that specializes in green energy.

The venture makes charcoal from various waste products such as paper and agricultural waste.

Lesan, who prides herself on making green charcoal, is set to meet and receive an awarad from queen Elizabeth for her outstanding work.

She will be among three Kenyans who will receive the Queen’s Young Leaders Award.

Looking back, she admits that the venture has met its goal of environmental conservation and reducing deforestation.

The award began in 2014 and  recognizes outstanding young people between 18-29 years with exceptional leadership skills solving various challenges in their communities.

Also receiving the award this year are Domtila Chesang and Towett Ngetich.

Last year, Alex Mativo, (22) Peris Bosire, (25) and Susan Mueni Waita (22) won the award.
