NASA Leaders Meet with IEBC Commissioners

National Super Alliance (NASA) principals, led by flag bearer Raila Odinga, have urgently met the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Odinga, accompanied by Moses Wetangula and other NASA officials, were hosted by IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati to discuss issues related to the August 8 General Election.

According to a statement from the electoral body, the two parties deliberated on several matters including the ongoing voter verification exercise, campaigns, voting and the elections conference.

“We hosted NASA leaders to deliberate on voter verification, nominations, campaigns, voting & the elections conference,” stated the Commission.

The meeting came a day after Odinga skipped a forum organised by IEBC with all presidential candidates where the body laid down all requirements the aspirants should meet ahead of the election.

During the conference, IEBC surprised the independent presidential candidates asking them to present a list of 2000 signatures of voters who are not members of any political party, a directive that sparked protests from the aspirants.

Apart from the ODM leader, President Uhuru Kenyatta similarly skipped the event but sent representatives.

The Opposition has recently been at loggerheads with IEBC after the Commission went to court to appeal a ruling declaring that presidential results announced by constituency returning officers were final and not subject to any alterations.

IEBC, however, argued that the ruling had given the constituency officials the authority to declare the presidential winners, which the body insists is a preserve of the Commission Chair.

Last week, NASA sued the Commission asking the court to bar returning officers of all 47 counties and 290 constituencies from conducting their work, claiming that the IEBC boss had not consulted stakeholders before their appointment.
