Mandera Governor Ali Roba Has Survived 5 Attacks

Mandera Governor Ali Roba narrowly escaped death on Wednesday when a vehicle in his convoy was hit by a landmine.

The attack which left several officers injured happened at Simo area as the Governor was travelling from Arabia to Lafey for a campaign event.

This is not the first time that the governor has cheated death. In the last three years, Roba has suffered four more attacks but has escaped unhurt.

In March 2015, three people including two police officers were killed after the Governor's convoy was ambushed along the Mandera-Arabia road.

Mr Roba was headed to a public meeting in three vehicles when attackers fired a rocket-propelled grenade hitting two of the escort cars.

The Governor was lucky to escape the assault since his vehicle had already passed the area.

On 15 October 2014, the Governor escaped death narrowly when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded, damaging one of the vehicles in his convoy.

The county boss stated that he was heading to his office in Mandera town in the company of four vehicles.

After passing the scene in the third vehicle, the one behind him was hit by the explosive leaving his bodyguards injured.

Following the 2014 attack, he revealed that there had been two other attempts on his life by unknown assailants.

The governor disclosed that on two occasions, grenades had been hurled at his offices which he claimed targeted him.

"This is another assassination attempt on my life after my office was attacked twice previously," Roba said.

One was in August the same year when he escaped an assassination attempt after eight armed men stormed into the county government premises and hurled grenades at his office. The attack left one side of the building severely damaged.
