Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho Blocked From Attending Standard Gauge Railway Launch

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has been blocked from attending the launch of the Standard Gauge Railway at Miritini in Mombasa County.

According to Joho's Spokesman Richard Chacha, General Service Unit (GSU) Officers blocked the Governor from entering the railway station.

On Tuesday, Government spokesman Erick Kiraithe had announced that Governor Joho was free to attend the launch of the SGR.

Kiraithe, however, cautioned that Joho should not issue ultimatums to the government and force his way to the dais.

Joho had earlier on vowed to attend the launch so as to question President Uhuru Kenyatta on why SGR costs were inflated by Sh100 Billion.

“The project was to cost not more than Sh200 Billion but the Jubilee government is telling us it has cost more than Sh300 Billion. We deserve answers before the launch," the Governor said.

In the recent past, Joho has been confronting the President and his deputy, accusing them of launching fake projects and corruption, a move that has seen him locked out of many presidential functions.

During the launch of the SGR Train, which was named Madaraka Express, the President announced that passengers travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa would pay Sh700 for economy class tickets and not Sh 900 as earlier on indicated.
