Raila Odinga Supports Punishment of Those Vandalising Standard Gauge Railway, Condemns Exclusion of Governor Joho from Launch

Opposition Chief Raila Odinga has agreed with President Uhuru Kenyatta that suspects found vandalising the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) should be severely punished.

The Opposition chief, however, noted that the punishment should be meted out following due procedure of the law.

This comes after Kenyatta indicated that he would bring back the death penalty to those found destroying parts of the railway and other government projects while flagging off the maiden SGR passenger train from Mombasa to Nairobi.

Odinga also applauded the project saying it would be beneficial to Kenyans but warned that it was not a Jubilee government project.

"This is a good project that will benefit Kenyans but it is sad that it is being turned into a Jubilee campaign project.

"Uhuru should not lie to Kenyans that this is his project, we laid the groundwork during the Grand Coalition government," he said during a press briefing.

He also touched on the dire consequences of the project, highlighting the debt that Kenya had plunged herself into.

The SGR project has cost the country over Sh300 Billion and the debt is expected to take years to settle.

The NASA flagbearer also raised an issue with the fact that Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho was barred from attending the grand launch, saying that was unfortunate as the project was being launched in his county.

"It is sad that Joho was not allowed to attend. He is the Mombasa governor and I am sure he would have conducted himself as a statesman," he remarked.

Joho was barred from attending the event by police at Miritini for fear of causing trouble during the exercise.
