Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi Accuses Governor Peter Munya of Destroying Billboards Worth Over Sh300,000

The race for the Meru gubernatorial race has taken a new twist after Senator Kiraitu Murungi sought police intervention over accusations that the incumbent governor Peter Munya was sabotaging his campaign.

Speaking after recording a statement at the Meru police station, Senator Kiraitu accused Governor Munya of hiring goons to destroy his campaign posters.

Kiraitu claimed that he had erected billboards from Meru town to Nakumatt shopping mall worth over Sh300,000, had been defaced by his rival for the seat, Munya.

"We have been preaching peace but Governor Peter Munya has every intention to make this campaign hostile and violent contrary to the code of conduct by the IEBC," said Kiraitu.

He alleged that Munya had vowed that his billboards would not be erected in Meru and was using underhand tactics to derail his campaign.

“It in an elector offense for any candidate or agents of that candidates to deface or remove election material of their opponents or other candidates or political party," noted Kiraitu.

Governor Munya in a quick rejoinder, however, refuted the claims and stating that Kiraitu and Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi were trying to intimidate him.

Munya claimed that the two were using police and provincial administration to intimidate him and his supporters ahead of the August 8 polls.
