A 22-year-old student from Multimedia University of Kenya committed suicide days after he was allegedly sent home over tuition arrears.
Fredrick Kinyanjui, a second-year student, was found hanging from the rooftop of their home in Shauri Moyo area in Nairobi on Tuesday.
The deceased's mother was at work when the incident happened.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the University's Student Leader, Robin Boit refuted claims that the student had committed suicide over school fees arrears.
"The school cannot send any person home because of not clearing school fees. I talked to the Kinyanjui's mother and she explained to me that the student was not comfortable staying in school that is why he was home for the two weeks," the student leader noted.
He added: "His school fees had already been cleared but he was requesting his mother to get the money back. I think he committed suicide because of other personal issues."
Buruburu Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Jeremiah Kiao confirmed the incident.
This comes after a 17-year-old Form One student from Mwatate Secondary School in Taita Taveta County hang himself inside the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK).
The deceased, who was previously in Moi High School, was reportedly transferred to the Day school after his mother failed to raise the school fees demanded by the former institution.
Reports stated that the deceased had been a bright student and had complained bitterly over the transfer.
Area Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) boss Shedrack Mutungi asked schools to strengthen guidance and counselling.
