Eight politicians on Monday decamped from President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee team and joined the National Super Alliance (NASA) led by Raila Odinga ahead of the August elections.
The politicians hailing from Deputy President William Ruto's Rift Valley backyard stated that they were joining NASA as it was the winning team.
“NASA is the winning team and its the way to go,” former Eldoret South Legislator Jesse Mais stated.
The eight politicians who joined the Opposition include; Chesumei Member of Parliament (MP) Elijah Lagat, former MPs Stephen Tarus (Emgwen), Peris Simam (Eldoret South) David Koech (Mosop) Mais, John Cheruiyot (Molo) and former Army Commander General (Rtd) Augustine Cheruiyot.
ODM Secretary for Devolution Kipkorir Menjo explained that although most of the politicians had lost their seats, they still had a large following within their areas and were important in influencing the people to vote for NASA.
“They have decided to join the winning team. We are already working with them to ensure we penetrate this region that is wrongly perceived to be a Jubilee stronghold.
“We are organising a forum where we will all meet and plan how to approach campaigns in the next weeks,” Menjo stated.
Most of the defectors had participated in the Jubilee party nominations but lost, complaining of flawed nominations designed to favour certain people.
The defection comes a few days after the Jubilee team led by President Kenyatta and his deputy Ruto conducted a series of campaigns in the region.
