Postal Corporation of Kenya to Fire 1280 Employees

The Postal Corporation of Kenya is set to sack 1280 employees as the state corporation seeks to rebrand and stay afloat.

The staff rationalisation program will see nearly half of the employees of the state corporation rendered jobless as part of a restructuring initiative that aims at making the parastatal more competitive.

The decision is part of a task force report presented to the Broadcast and Telecommunications Principal Secretary (PS) Sammy Itemere.

According to the task force, the bloated staff is a key contributor to the high operational cost of the struggling parastatal hence the need to bring down the number.

Posta Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Kagwe disclosed that more than 40 percent of the staff at the corporation were above the age of 55 years and would be considered in the staff rationalisation program.

Kagwe stated that the corporation will be seeking to reenergize its workforce to stay more responsive to consumer needs.

"In courier business, you should be having an average age of 25 because you are carrying things, you are moving things from here and there, you are working overnight and all." he stated.

The task force, led by Mary Nyachae compiled the report over the last one year in coordination with the staff of the corporation.

The entry of more competitive brands in the courier business has seen the state corporation struggle to stay afloat in the last few years.

Earlier this week, the High Court dismissed a case challenging the closure of stationery and food company Kenafric Industries Limited, raising concerns that more than 1000 employees could lose their jobs.
