Nakumatt Supermarket Confirms that It Will Not Close Eight Branches

Nakumatt Holdings on Monday issued a public statement dispelling social media rumours that it had plans to close down eight of its branches in the country.

The Chief Marketing Officer, Andrew Nixon confirmed that the company had no intentions of closing down its stores some of which are amongst the most popular branches.

“We apologise for any inconveniences or upset this malicious and erroneous commentary may have caused to any of our loyal customers,” the statement read.

The announcement came amid speculations that the retail giant was planning to close down eight of its branches including Westland, Lavington, TRM, Embakasi, Garden City and the New Kitsuru following ongoing financial woes.

Earlier on, Nakumatt had written a letter to Industry, Trade and Cooperatives Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo asking the State to help them out like they did with Uchumi Supermarkets.

Nakumatt’s Boss Atul Shah blamed the Supermarket's latest woes on a series of Government actions dating back to 1998.

The Government has, however, declared that it will not bail out struggling retail giant Nakumatt Limited.

Kiptoo stated that Nakumatt was a private company, unlike its counterpart Uchumi Supermarkets in which the Government holds a stake.
