TSC to Punish Teachers for Taking IEBC Jobs and Supporting NASA, Jubilee and Other Political Parties

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has warned its 305,000 teachers against supporting political parties including the Jubilee Party and the National Super Alliance (NASA) affiliate parties.

TSC stated that the teachers will be punished for taking up jobs with the parties as well as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In a circular issued to school heads yesterday, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia outlined that the teachers' Code of Regulations prohibited the practice.

"It is illegal for any teacher to attend IEBC training as Presiding Officers, Deputy Presiding Officers, Polling Clerks or an agent of any political party whether during working day or over the holiday (which are normal working days where teachers are paid).

"The Code of Regulations of teachers prohibits teachers from being partisan in any political set up," the circular read in part.

The ban comes a month after the government banned the use of institutional facilities and equipment for political parties.

Education Principal Secretary Bellio Kipsang also banned the hiring out of school buses to anyone other than public institutions.

Mrs Macharia mandated the school heads with the responsibility of ensuring that the political situation in the country does not interfere with teaching and learning in the schools.

"Breach of the foregoing directions will result in disciplinary action as a result of absconding duty and insubordination of the employer," the circular concluded.

The warning comes amid infighting in the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) which arose after KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion was nominated to parliament by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
