Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has been appointed as the acting Interior Cabinet Secretary following the death of Joseph Nkaissery.
President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement at State House after chairing the National Security Council meeting.
"There shall be no vacuum in securing our country. I have appointed Education CS Fred Matiangi as the Acting CS for security to ensure there is no vacuum," President Kenyatta stated
The President recalled his last moments with the late Interior CS describing his death as a great loss to the country.
"We were discussing issues as late as 9:30 pm last night on peace and security of this country among Kenya's preparedness for Junior Athletics which commences in a few days," Uhuru narrated.
He added, "His death comes at a critical time as we approach the general election. We assure all Kenyans that the nation is secure and our security forces are doing all they can to ensure our security."
The President offered condolences to Nkaissery's family and called on Kenyans to mourn in peace and stand united as the results of the post-mortem are released.
Nkaissery died on Saturday morning after being admitted at the Karen Hospital.
His body was later taken to the Lee funeral home.
