Nkaissery's Successor Acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i Imposes Curfew in Lamu, Garissa and Tana River Counties

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has hit the ground running by issuing his first order just hours after being appointed.

The CS has imposed a dawn to dusk curfew for three months covering Lamu, Tana River and Garissa counties.

In a Gazette notice issued on Saturday, the CS stated that the curfew would start on July 9 and run through to October 9 beginning at 6:30 pm and ending at 6:30 am.

The decision came following rising cases of insecurity with terror group Al-Shabaab conducting numerous fatal attacks in the region.

In the latest attack carried out on Saturday, the military group beheaded nine people in Lamu, leaving residents in fear.

Following the increasing attacks, President Uhuru Kenyatta chaired a National Security Council meeting on Saturday in which the government declared several areas in the three countries disturbed and dangerous.

The areas include Holugho Border Point, Galmagala, Sangailu, Masalani, Bodehei, Milimani, Baure, Basuba, Mangai and Maralani.

Other areas that will be affected by the curfew include Ijara, Hola, Garsen, Kipini, Kiunga and Ishakani/ Dar-es-Salaam Border Point.

Secure areas in the three counties such as Islands of Lamu, Manda and Pate will however not be affected by the curfew.

Matiang'i was appointed to the position following the sudden death of Joseph Nkaissery.

Known for his decisive actions and reforming the ministry of education, Kenyans will be relying on Matiang'i to ensure that they are safe as the country heads to elections.
