Internally Displaced Persons in Uasin Gishu Threaten to Ditch President Uhuru Kenyatta for Raila Odinga

A group of over 1,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Uasin Gishu county have threatened to vote out President Uhuru Kenyatta if they are not compensated.

The IDPs from Chaigaiya and Burnt Forest announced that they will vote for the National Super Alliance (NASA) if the Jubilee administration continues to ignore them.

The group led by Lonah Sangony noted that the government had compensated other IDPs but they had been ignored and were only being given false promises.

“We have always been promised assistance since the violence, but have received nothing. And yet we see the government giving out compensation funds in other areas,” she stated.

They noted that they had been promised approximately Sh210,000 each to help in their resettlement but they had received nothing so far.

NASA politicians in the County met the protesting IDPs and urged President Kenyatta's administration to release money for the resettlement of the 2007 Post-Election Violence victims.

The politicians led by Kipkoror Menjo,  Joseph Misoi and former Kesses legislator Jesse Maisz noted that the issue of IDPs would be a thing of the past if NASA forms the next government.

“The government has failed to tackle this issue of IDPs and we in NASA plan to deal with it effectively once elected,” Menjo stated.

Mr Maisz, on his part, stated that the issue of resettlement should not be politicised as all people were affected.

“There should have been a coordinated plan to ensure all Kenyans who were affected are compensated. But Jubilee has politicised the whole issue causing more suffering to the victims,” Maisz stated.

Uasin Gishu is considered a Jubilee Party stronghold as it is the home of Deputy President William Ruto.

In 2013 elections, President Kenyatta got 211,438 votes whereas Opposition leader Raila Odinga garnered 60,060 votes.
