Kitui County Assistant Commissioner Benson Karani and 2 Police Officers Jailed for Torturing Prisoners

Kitui County Assistant Commissioner and two police constables have been sentenced to one and a half years in jail for torturing suspects in their custody.

The Commissioner, Benson Karani, constables Samuel Wamba Seye and Urbanus Mulonzi are accused of severely beating up three suspects they had arrested in September 2015.

The officers are accused of torturing three brothers Joseph Mutemi, Muimi Mutemi and Martin Mutemi leaving them with serious injuries.

According to the presiding judge, one of the victims endured severe pain and difficulties when urinating, which arose from the beatings.

The officers were charged with three counts of torture and assault.

The court, however, gave the three an option of paying Sh200,000 fine for each of the counts they faced.

A fourth suspect who was the complainant in the matter that led to the arrest of the three brothers was also convicted of one assault charge and sentenced to one year in jail or a fine of Sh50,000.

Civil society groups in Kitui, however, criticised the ruling as too lenient given the life-threatening injuries the victims sustained.
