Police Officers to Get 100 Percent Salary Increase From July

A leaked proposal from the Office of the Inspector General of Police indicates that President Uhuru Kenyatta's government plans to increase the salaries of Kenyan police officers and prison warders.

According to the plan, some law enforcement officers are scheduled to get paid up to double what they earn presently starting July 2017, pending approval.

The increments, however, will take place in four phases that will end in 2022 when the next General Election is scheduled to take place.

A police constable, the lowest ranking officer, who currently earns a basic salary of Sh17,800 will take home Sh32,880 monthly by 2020.

Corporals, whose monthly salary stands at Sh21,000 will earn Sh42,660 by the end of the four-phase revision.

Next in rank are Sergeants who have been taking home Sh28,671 but will now get a raise of up to Sh45,540.

Senior Sergeants have been placed in the fourth category and will now earn a salary of Sh50,220 up from Sh31,737, while an Inspector of police will earn a basic salary of Sh53,820, up from Sh33,903.

Pay grade six will see a Chief Inspector earn Sh59,220 while an Assistant Superintendent of Police will be taking home Sh70,530.

Superintendents and Senior Superintendents will now draw a monthly salary of Sh73,020 and Sh85,890 respectively.

Members of the force who will earn a six-figure salary in an all new pay grade 10 of the structure will include; Commissioners of police who will take home Sh130,590, the Assistant inspector-general of police who will pocket Sh187,890 and the Senior assistant inspector-general who will be earning Sh274,890 every month.

The Inspector General of Police will be paid Sh854,241, according to the new structure.

The information was leaked on Wednesday in an internal communiqué that is reported to have been prompted by the Directorate of Personnel Management and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC)
