Presidential Candidate Dr Ekuru Aukot and his counterpart Professor Michael Wainaina caused a scene after they were blocked from accessing Catholic University Auditorium for the presidential running mates debate.
Reports indicate that Aukot and Wainaina who were accompanied by their running mates Emmanuel Nzai and Miriam Mutua arrived after the debate had already started
This led to the running mate debate being a one man only show as only Presidential Candidate Japheth Kavinga’s running mate Eliud Kariara showed up early.
Speaking during the debate, Kariara said that he and Dr Kavinga were a dynamic team with fresh and new ideas to transform the country for the better.
"Elect leaders who are beyond reproach, to make it easy for government to fight corruption. Do not vote for corrupt MCAs, MPs, senators and governors. Elect the right people who can make laws that will ensure the vice is eliminated," Kariara stated.
He added, "Election is for all Kenyans not for Jubilee or NASA, look at your life and ask if it has become better or worse, vote wisely."
Most Kenyans on social media admired his bravery and appreciated him for showing up for the debate.
The presidential running mates debate had been split into two. Running mates with an approval rating of less than 5 % were to debate from 5.30 pm while those with more than 5% popularity would take to the stage from 8 pm.
Abduba Dida of the Alliance for Real Change Party had stated that his running mate would also not participate in the debates due to discrimination.
Nzai who is Aukot’s running mate under the Thirdway Alliance Kenya Party, stated that he will only attend the debate if all candidates are present and treated equally.
Deputy President William Ruto and National Super Alliance’s (NASA) Kalonzo Musyoka had also stated they would not attend the event.
DP Ruto is still campaigning at the Coast with President Uhuru Kenyatta while Kalonzo is out of the country.
