SGR Passengers Stranded in Syokimau After Train Departure Time Changed

Passengers waiting to board the Standard Guage Railway (SGR) train at Syokimau Railway Station were left stranded following a mix up on departure time.

The train left the station 30 minutes earlier than usual leaving scores of passengers who had bought tickets prior confused and grounded.

Previously, the commuter link train departed Syokimau at 7:00 am but in a new schedule published by the Kenya Railway Corporation (KRC) the train will henceforth leave the station at 6:30 am.

Railway operators estimate that the train will take 30 minutes to arrive at the Nairobi Railway Station and proceed to make another stop-over at the Makadara Railway Station by 7:44 am.

It will then pass by the Imara Daima Station at 7:58 am, get to the SGR Nairobi Terminus at 8:20 am then proceed to Mombasa.

KRC Managing Director Atanas Maina explained that the change in departure time was the corporation's strategy to improve efficiency.

"The new schedule will ensure that passengers using the commuter link to the SGR Nairobi terminus have ample time to prepare to board the Madaraka Express before departure time (to Mombasa)," he explained.

Last week, the train broke down at Kibwezi while en route from Mombasa. However, it was fixed within an hour and proceeded with the journey to Nairobi.
