Details of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Succession Plan

Details have emerged of a secret succession plan in Central Kenya that could alter political alignment and prove a challenge to Deputy President (DP) William Ruto in his 2022 presidential bid.

Sources privy to the details revealed to a local daily that plans are at an advanced stage with an outfit taking shape in secrecy and awaiting the outcome of the August elections.

It has emerged that some influential politicians are among those in the powerful group hatching a plot to consolidate the Central region block behind an heir that will be made public soon after the elections.

The group also brings together business people, the clergy and state officers keen to have an upper hand and are already making "early preparations"

Last month, Kiambu Governor William Kabogo hinted at the changing dynamics in politics, stating that "we will not elect anyone in 2022, unless we see the work done. I’m not going to deputise anyone. He can actually also be my deputy."

This could be a huge setback to the DP who has declared an interest in the Presidency in 2022 and is expected to be the successor of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Ruto fell out with a section of Jubilee politicians from the region after many of them accused him of interfering with party nominations.

Some, including the Kiambu governor, have previously warned the DP that support for his candidature in 2022 is not guaranteed.

Influential Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri is said to be the leading contender in the race to succeed President Kenyatta.
