Chief Justice David Maraga Warns President Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila Odinga and Others Against Attacking Judges

Chief Justice David Maraga has ordered members of the political class to cease public lynching of the judges and the Judiciary as a whole.

In a press statement on Wednesday, the CJ listed top politicians accusing them of blackmailing and intimidating judges.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has been accused of attacking the Judiciary on two separate accounts. Once on July 9 when he accused the High Court of working with NASA after they ruled to have the IEBC re-advertise the ballot printing tender.

On July 10, President Kenyatta along with his deputy William Ruto accused judges of working with the Opposition to postpone the General Election.

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale is listed as having accused Justice George Odunga of playing tribal politics and being partisan in December of 2016.

NASA leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka are accused of intimidating judges in May 2017 when they announced that they would organize public protests if the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the IEBC on the matter of the final announcement of presidential election results.

The CJ further warned Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri and Kinago parliamentarian Gonzi Rai for accusing him of "failing to conduct due diligence in appointing Justice Odunga to sit in the bench of the Al Ghurair case."

"The emerging culture of public lynching of judges and judicial officers by members of the political class is a vile affront to the rule of law and must be fiercely resisted.

"We wish to state that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Judiciary will not cower to these intimidating tactics," the CJ asserted.

He assured the judges of protection from political attacks as well as zero interference in the rulings they pass.
