Police Hunt for City Banker Who Posted Hateful Tweet

Police have launched a manhunt for a Nairobi banker who is accused of having posted a hateful tweet.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome on Monday conveyed that his team was searching for the city banker after he posted a threatening message on Twitter.

The Relation Manager at a leading city bank posted, "Nishabuy panga na marungu (I've already bought a machete and clubs). I will surely kill some of them."

"This is a whole banker. We are looking for him. He will go to court and many more will also go. You joke with the social media but you will carry your own cross. Some may be doing it innocently, but I don’t think whether you know the implications," Koome stated.

Mr Koome further cautioned Kenyans to be vigilant against fake news being spread on social media and intended to cause fear and anxiety.

He warned those spreading propaganda on post election violence that they would be sentenced to the Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Mr Koome spoke during a press briefing where he stated that the 9-year-old girl who was shot dead in Mathare was killed by an armed gangster and not police.

The police boss also echoed statements issued by Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet concerning alleged attacks by Mungiki sect in Mathare.

Mr Boinnet dismissed reports purporting that Mathare slums had been raided by members of the outlawed group on Sunday night.

He added that the police were investigating the source of the alarming reports that he has since dismissed as "fake news".

The IG has vowed to take legal action against all those found culpable of propagating the reports.
