IG Joseph Boinnet Announces Legal Action Against Alleged Fake News on Mathare

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has issued a warning to journalists and media houses that published reports of attacks in Mathare.

Mr Boinnet on Monday dismissed the reports purporting that Mathare slums had been raided on Sunday night.

He added that the police were investigating the source of the alarming reports that he has since dismissed as "fake news".

The IG further vowed to take legal action against all those found culpable of propagating the reports.

Meanwhile, addressing the press on Monday morning, Nairobi County Police Commander Japheth Koome refuted claims that police had killed innocent Kenyans over the weekend.

"Our mandate is to ensure life and property are protected at all costs without fear or favour. We have only used firearms on armed gangs that have been attacking Nairobi residents," Koome stated.

Koome maintained there was no violence in areas including Mathare and Dandora on Sunday night as earlier reported.

Most recent reports from the slums indicate that a 10-year-old girl, Moraa Nyarangi, was killed by a stray bullet during protests over the weekend.

Authorities are yet to confirm the girl's death and the exact death toll from the post-election protests.

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Chairperson Francis Ole Kaparo has also cautioned social media users against sharing false images and messages that may cause tension.

"Social media users are doing a disservice to this country by posting false photos meant to divide the people on political grounds," Kaparo stated.
