Kitui Governor-elect Charity Ngilu Rejects Sh6 Million Inauguration Budget, Asks for Only a Bible

Kitui Governor-elect Charity Ngilu has rejected a Sh6 Million budget meant for her inauguration, saying she only needs a Bible during the event.

She instructed the team planning her inauguration that the money should be channeled towards thousands of people suffering due to water scarcity instead of being used in a one-day event.

Ngilu stated that the ceremony does not have to be lavish and that she can be sworn in without having to incur unnecessary expenses.

“All we need on that day is the Bible and venue and it certainly does not cost Sh6 million.

"Let us be sensitive to the poor in all our actions,” she said when she visited Kitui County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich.

During the briefing also attended by the County Chief Officer for Water Jacob Mwandikwa, Mrs Ngilu sought a report on the state of boreholes in the county that require repairs.

“The voices I have heard from the people are those of despair and I believe that we can begin to change this right away.

It must not wait any further” she said.

Mrs Ngilu will be sworn in on August 22, 2017 at Muslim Secondary School grounds to succeed outgoing Governor Julius Malombe.

Nairobi governor-elect Mike Sonko also rejected Sh25 million set aside for his inauguration, saying it should be used to offset the one-month arrears owed to county employees.

The amount was allocated by the Assumption of Office Committee following his victory against ODM's Evans Kidero on August 8.

Sonko, who was Senator, has ordered county Chief Finance Officer Luke Gatimu to pay the workers within the next 48 hours.
