Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was sworn-in on Monday morning at Uhuru Park in a colourful ceremony that was graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.
During his first speech, Sonko made a number of promises and assured residents of the city that he would not let them down.
"Nairobi will never be the same again. This day marks the end of cartels," he said.
In his address, he highlighted several areas he would rectify to ensure Nairobi was a better place.
1. Ensuring timely services to all and value for taxpayers.
2. Cleaning up the city
3. Adequate supply of water to all residents
4. Building more markets, improving existing ones and quick issuance of licenses
5. Seal all loopholes of cartels handling buying and selling of land
6. Support women, youth and people with disabilities in setting up businesses
During his speech, President Kenyatta thanked outgoing governor Dr Evans Kidero for showing statesmanship by accepting defeat and handing power to Sonko.
The Head of State further wished Kidero well in his endeavours and assured incoming Governor Sonko of support from the National Government to help him achieve his plans.
Kidero acknowledged Sonko's victory and said the event depicted democracy.
He, however, told Sonko that the office came with a lot of responsibility and was not a 'bed of roses'.
