EACC Arrests Nairobi County Officials a Day After Governor Mike Sonko's Swearing-In

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives have arrested Nairobi County Officials a day after the inauguration of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Nairobi County Executive Committee officer Gregory Mwakanongo and Chief Finance Officer Luka Gatimu were arrested on Tuesday morning.

The two officials are accused of authorizing the payment of  Sh71.8 Million to a legal firm, Kaseyo Company and Advocates, for services provided to the Nairobi County Government.

Justifying the arrest, the County Attorney stated that the County officials should provide an explanation for such huge payment in one day.

According to the letter issued by the county lawyer, the law firm was paid six times on 30th June.

The attorney noted that the queries were raised during a County Assembly session where lawmakers demanded an explanation as to why such an amount of money was paid to one company.

The arrest came a few hours after Governor Sonko promised to deal with cartels that have denied the city revenue to finance most of its activities.

"We are going to seal all loopholes to suffocate cartels stealing our revenue, traders will no longer suffer under people mandated to protect them," he stated.

Besides corruption, Sonko also promised to deal with environmental conservation, provision of health facilities, proper drainage system and infrastructure development.

He was sworn in alongside his Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe.
