IEBC Asks Politicians Who Vied in 2017 to Remove Campaign Materials Within 7 Days

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to all candidates, agents, political parties and party members.

In a notice, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati asked the candidates to remove all banners, billboards, placards and posters within seven days.

Chebukati stated that those who fail to follow the order would be punished under the Second Schedule (Electoral Code of Conduct) of the Elections Act, 2011.

The notice reads, "You are required to remove all banners, billboards, placards and posters erected during the election period within seven (7) days of this Notice, failure to which the Commission SHALL impose sanctions stipulated under the Second Schedule (Electoral Code of Conduct) of the Elections Act, 2011."

Earlier on, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) had stated it would hold accountable all candidates who had not cleared their campaign posters from the public space.

According to Nema’s Compliance and Enforcement Officer Zephania Ouma, some candidates had voluntarily removed the posters but there was still much to be done.

“Some of the candidates have already taken up the responsibility of clearing their campaign material from public spaces and we expect the rest to adhere to the set guidelines,” Ouma stated.

NEMA was acting according to the Environment Management Coordination Act, 2013, that states all candidates are required to clear campaign materials after elections to prevent environmental pollution.
