Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s Security Detail Scaled up After Swearing-in

The government has beefed up the security detail of Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho a day after he was sworn into office.

Mombasa OCPD Lucas Ogara confirmed that the governor’s security detail had been scaled up to include GSU, regular and administration police.

“Joho is entitled to them. Elected leaders enjoy police protection based on provisions,” he stated.

The police boss added that Joho’s bodyguards had been reinstated and that he (Joho) would receive security detail at his residence and office.

Joho, who has been viewed as the fiercest critic of Uhuru's administration, had his security detail withdrawn in January in what he termed as Jubilee's efforts to intimidate him.

During that time, President Uhuru Kenyatta, through State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu, explained that the withdrawal of the security teams of the Mombasa Governor and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi was part of the local security’s command to restructure security in the area.

Mr Esipisu denied any political motive in the withdrawal of the bodyguards stating, “Reorganizations happen across the country all the time. Local commands make local decisions and we should not jump to conclusions”.

Joho later declared that he did not want State security and was at one point forced to drive himself to Bomas of Kenya where the Opposition coalition was holding a grand event.
