Water CS Eugene Wamalwa Denies Contesting to be National Assembly Speaker

Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has dismissed reports that he intends to contest for the position of the National Assembly Speaker.

Wamalwa on Thursday denied earlier claims that he has written a letter to the Clerk of the National Assembly Michael Sialai throwing his hat into the ring.

The Cabinet Secretary further affirmed that he did not have the intentions to oppose sitting Speaker Justin Muturi.

Lobbying is said to be going on for various positions in both the National Assembly and the Senate especially those left vacant.

In the Deputy Speaker position that was previously occupied by Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso, Marakwet West MP Samuel Cheboi has already expressed interest in going for the seat.

Meanwhile, Jubilee Party is reportedly planning to replace Kajiado South MP Katoo ole Metito as the Majority Whip in the National Assembly with his Kikuyu counterpart Kimani Ichungw'a.

On the other hand, Kitui West MP Francis Nyenze will have to defend his position as the House Minority leader against Suba lawmaker John Mbadi.

In the Senate, Farah Maalim who served as deputy Speaker in the 10th Parliament is set to contest for the position with incumbent Ekwe Ethuro.

The Senate deputy Speaker's position which was left vacant by former Murang'a lawmaker Kembi Gitura could now be occupied by Senator Kimani wa Matangi (Kiambu), Susan Kihika (Nakuru) or Irungu Kang’ata (Murang’a) who have declared an interest.

NASA co-principal who is also the Bungoma legislator Moses Wetangula could continue being the Senate Minority leader since no one has so far challenged him for the post.

After the lawmakers are sworn in, they are expected to also select members and chairpersons of the various House committees including Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Public Investment Committee (PIC), Budget and Appropriation Committee among others.
