Former Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro to Recieve Sh17 Million Send-Off Package

Former Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro is set to receive a send-off package worth Sh17 Million following the end of his tenure.

Ethuro failed to secure a second stint in the office, with Jubilee lawmakers opting to back former Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka.

According to the Retirement Benefits (Deputy President and Designated State Officers) Act, 2015, the former speaker is entitled to a lump sum payment of Sh15,840,000 or the equivalent of one year’s salary.

The former Turkana Central MP is also set to receive a monthly fuel allowance worth 15% of his salary, which translates to Sh198,000 a month. The Salaries and Remuneration Commission set the salary for the speakers of both houses at Sh1.32 Million in 2013.

But it doesn’t end there.

Former speakers also get other life-long benefits, including one saloon vehicle with an engine capacity not exceeding 2000cc replaceable every four years. Also replaceable every four years is one four-wheel vehicle with an engine capacity not exceeding 4000cc.

He is also entitled to a full medical cover for him and his spouse with a reputable insurance company. Should he make a request, two armed guards will be at his service.

He and his spouse will also get diplomatic passports and can use VIP lounges at airports in the country.

Mr Ethuro is also entitled to two drivers, one personal assistant, one secretary, one housekeeper, one senior support staff, one gardener and one cleaner.
