The police, in collaboration with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) have issued a notice to Kenyans who have been sharing hateful messages on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter concerning the Supreme Court ruling on the recent presidential election.
National Police Service spokesman George Kinoti told journalists that a crackdown has been ongoing and many politicians and members of the public will be arrested and charged with hate speech on the week beginning September 4.
"We have the National Cohesion and Integration Act, the Communications Act and the Penal Code which will help us deal with these people," Mr Kinoti stated.
He added that the Cybercrime Investigation Unit would also go after those who use pseudo accounts to spew hatred.
The spokesman further warned politicians that their hateful political sentiments will see them prosecuted.
Speaking on Sunday, NCIC Chairman Francis Ole Kaparo noted that hate speech on the online platforms had spiked after the ruling issued by the Supreme Court on Friday.
"We are aware that this is happening on social media and our officers are doing their investigations and we will apprehend a number of people.
"I equally appeal to politicians to tone down on the rhetoric that fuel this hatred. They should respect the court’s decision and allow for the authorities to do their work," the NCIC Chairman reiterated.
