IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba Reveals Cost of Fresh Presidential Election

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Ezra Chiloba has announced the projected cost of the upcoming October 17th Presidential election.

In an interview with The East African, Mr Chiloba was asked about the budget for the fresh election, to which he responded: "We project about Ksh12 billion ($116 million) most of which will go towards human resources and logistics."

The electoral body has already written to the National Treasury requesting the release of the funds.

A breakdown of the budget shows what specific areas the money will be spent on.

Sh1.49 Billion has been set aside for what the commission terms as enhancement of technology, Sh2.39 billion for polling officials’ wages, and Sh1.9 Billion for transport within the counties.

Sh1.3 Billion will be spent on acquisition of electoral materials, Sh2.9 Billion on training election officials and Sh214 Million for 'tallying centre expenses'.

The August 8th General Election was one of the world's most expensive polls, costing the Kenyan taxpayer Ksh42 Billion.

With President Kenyatta's win nullified by the Supreme Court, Kenyans head back to the polls on October 17th to vote for a new President.

The electoral body has been in the eye of the storm, with a leaked memo from Chairman Wafula Chebukati to CEO Ezra Chiloba exposing a rift within the commission.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) has called for the prosecution of Chiloba and 5 other Secretariat officials they allege were involved in unethical handling of the August election.
