CS Rotich Reveals Why Uhuru Has Banned All Government Officials from Travelling Abroad

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich has revealed that all government officials have been banned from travelling abroad ahead of the presidential elections due to budget constraints.

According to Mr Rotich, budget strains in the country's financial sector has forced the travel ban of state staff in a bid to ensure the government can cater for the upcoming election polls which will cost approximately Sh15 Billion.

Besides the travel ban, the government has put in place measures to ensure that purchases in the various ministries are halted during this period.

On Thursday, State House through the head of Public service Joseph Kinyua banned all foreign travels by government officials.

In a letter addressed to Cabinet Secretaries, the Attorney General, and Principal Secretaries, Mr Kinyua stated that no government official would be allowed to leave the country without clearance by the President.

"This is to notify you that it has been decided, until further advised otherwise, no government official will travel outside the country without clearance by the President,"read part of the letter which dated September 13th.

"For the avoidance of any doubt, the officials in reference include Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and officers in ministries, Chief executive officers of parastatals and their officers and Board of Director of Parastatals," it read.

The development comes just a month after IEBC commissioner Roselyn Akombe was forced to spend the night at JKIA after the state stopped her from travelling.

Shortly after, human rights activist Maina Kiai was also temporarily blocked by immigration officials.
