President Kenyatta Asks MP Wambugu Ngunjiri to Withdraw CJ Maraga Petition

President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu to withdraw a petition he filed against Chief Justice David Maraga.

Speaking at a gathering of leaders from the greater central Kenya today, Kenyatta said the focus must be campaigning for his re-election in the October 17 repeat elections.

The President noted he understood MP Wambugu’s pain at the decision taken by the Supreme Court to annul Aug 8 elections, but it was time to focus on securing the Presidency next month.

“I understand your pain and action. But we have an election to win on Oct 17. That has to be our focus. Leave the court alone. All what we want is for the will of the people to prevail,” he stated.

On Thursday, the Nyeri Town MP submitted a petition to the Judicial Service Commission seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.

Mr Wambugu stated that his petition was challenging Maraga's tenability stating the CJ had instituted "a judicial coup" as the head of the third arm of government.

In the 14-page petition, he added that Maraga exerted undue influence on other judges while delivering the ruling overturning President Kenyatta's win. This, according to Wambugu, amounts to gross misconduct.

The legislator further stated that Justice Maraga did not read through the evidence brought before him during the presidential petition hearing.

However, the Jubilee Party, through Secretary General Raphael, distanced itself from the petition stating that it was drafted by the MP as an individual.

The same was reiterated by Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen and his National Assembly counterpart Aden Duale who insisted that the MP had not consulted the party before filing the petition.
