Chief Justice David Maraga Appoints Judges to Hear Petitions

Chief Justice David Maraga has appointed judges who will hear and determine all the petitions filed regarding the August 8 elections.

In a Gazette notice published on Friday, Maraga selected judges to listen to the over 250 cases against senators, governors, MPs and MCAs who won in the August polls.

Those appointed include 50 judges who will be in charge of the more than 150 election petitions challenging the election of governors, senators and MPs.

Maraga has also gazetted various magistrates who will hear 166 petitions which have been filed against MCAs across the country.

For cases dealing with petitions challenging the election of leaders from Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties, they will be heard at Milimani Law Courts.

From the notice, some Nairobi judges have been moved to courts outside the Capital while others have been allocated more than four cases due to the high number of petitions.

The CJ called on the judges and magistrates to deal with the cases based on substantive issues rather than concentrate on legal and procedural technicalities.

Some of the notable cases include that challenging the election of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Bomet's Joyce Laboso and Martin Wambora of Embu.

Others include that against Garissa Township MP Aden Duale, Embakasi East lawmaker Babu Owino, Alfred Keter of Nandi Hills and Mishi Mboko of Likoni.
