Jubilee Governor Forced to Control Traffic After Police Absconded Duty

Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago was on Saturday night forced to step out of his car and direct traffic on the busy Eldoret-Iten Road after traffic police went missing.

The Governor and his entourage were traveling, when they encountered a serious traffic snarl-up. Efforts made by his aides to open up the flow of traffic failed, forcing Governor Mandago to intervene.

He alighted from his vehicle and started directing the traffic himself.

The angry governor verbally confronted matatu operators and other motorists who were disobeying traffic rules.

At the Iten Road Highlands Junction, Mandago was heard telling matatu drivers: "When all of you don't want to obey traffic regulations it does not help anyone and we end up getting stuck unnecessarily."

His efforts paid off as traffic eventually began flowing.

The Eldoret Traffic Base Commander was unavailable to explain where traffic officers normally deployed to the area were during the heavy traffic jam.

Aside from laxity on the part of the officers, narrow roads also greatly contribute to traffic jams in Eldoret town.

Residents have been pushing for the construction of the Eldoret Southern by-pass road which would help solve traffic problems in the town.

Governor Mandago stated that his government is working with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to ensure the Sh5.7 Billion project is completed in time.
