IEBC Told to Relocate Polling Stations Ahead of October Election

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Thika Branch Secretary-General has asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to relocate polling stations from schools to the nearest public institutions.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Mr Joe Ngige disclosed that school administrations incurred large costs fixing equipment destroyed during the August 8 General Election.

He further stated that candidates sitting for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams need serene environments for preparation.

He further asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure all learning institutions were guarded as security agents are likely to focus more on the election.

"IEBC should relocate the stations so schools are protected," Ngige stated.

Last week, Matiang'i announced changes in the national examination calendar ahead of the Presidential election set for October 26.

The CS also stated that all primary school students would break for the December holidays on October 25th while Form 1, 2 and 3 students go on holiday on October 24th.

According to Matiang'i, the change of the examination dates was necessitated by the fact that some schools had been gazetted as polling stations and tallying centres for the election.
