Kisumu Residents Hold Demonstrations Against Governor Anyang' Nyong'o

A section of Kisumu residents on Thursday held demonstrations against Governor Anyang' Nyong'o administration.

The protesters, mainly comprised of boda boda operators complained about daily levy fee proposed in the County Financial Bill, 2017.

They went around the town before camping outside Governor Nyong'o's office, demanding that he addresses them together with his deputy Mathews Owili.

Some chanted 'Nyong'o must go' while others asked his predecessor, Jack Ranguma, to come back and help them.

The Bill which was approved by the County Assembly last week proposed that each rider pay Sh20 everyday.

It also states that motorcycle operators will be charged Sh500 per month while those using bicycles will pay Sh200.

The rates are to be paid before the 15th of every month, failure to which a penalty of Sh50 percent of the charge will be imposed.

During a meeting in Kisumu, the riders' union rejected the fees noting their input was not considered while the budget was being drafted.

Union Secretary Fredrick Obonyo asked for public participation to be mandatory in the process and wondered why their views were not sought.

"We were not consulted and MCAs claimed the previous House did. They should have talked to us," claimed Obonyo.

Obonyo accused the county of failing to address the challenges in their sector terming it as ridiculous to demand tax from riders yet they do not get any services from the county.

"We are not getting any services from the county yet there are youths in this sector in its 35 wards. We also don't have designated parking areas," the Secretary added.
