A National Super Alliance (NASA) supporter has been shot by police in Homa Bay County during the countrywide anti-IEBC protests.

Police reportedly shot at 32-year-old Emmanuel Konduto several times as he attempted to flee from them in Sofia Estate.

Mr Konduto, a boda-boda rider, suffered several injuries from the rubber bullets and was rushed to the St Paul Hospital.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Marius Tum confirmed the incident assuring the public that the bodaboda rider would recover from the injuries.

"I had advised my officers not to use live bullets in quelling the protests," Mr Tum stated.

The NASA supporters are reported to have lit bonfires and blocked access to the town during a standoff with the law enforcement officers.

The police commander defended his officers saying that they could not have escalated their actions had they not been provoked by the NASA supporters.

"Police officers could have shot him using rubber bullets after he provoked them.

"I wanted the demonstrators to picket peacefully but they decided to attack police officers using stones and other crude objects," Mt Tum told reporters.

A concerned citizen, Mr Evans Gor, told reporters that the bodaboda operator had already surrendered to the police but they kept on shooting.

"We had to take him to the hospital because he was bleeding profusely," Gor said.

Meanwhile, in Busia County, NASA supporters hurled tear gas canisters back at the police who had been deployed to maintain peace in the area.
