NASA Announces Changes to Demonstration Days

The National Super Alliance (NASA) has announced that it will also be demonstrating against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesdays.

This means the protests will now be held thrice every week; on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The coalition is pushing for the ouster of IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba and other officials who allegedly bungled the August elections vowing not to participate in the elections if their demands are not met.

Speaking after a meeting with IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and other leaders earlier this week, Siaya Senator James Orengo revealed that the electoral body had not met NASA’s irreducible minimums.

Orengo asked IEBC to respond to the Opposition’s call so that the repeat presidential election can take place as scheduled.

“The Supreme Court didn’t rule elections must be held on 26th. We insist our irreducible minimums must be met for purposes of having an election, and in accordance with the Constitution.

“The best that has happened is that we will have another meeting and expect Commission will respond substantially to issues raised.

"If we go the route set out by the Commission, elections will be held within 60 days but it will not be held in accordance with the law,” Orengo pointed out.

Some supporters of NASA on Friday returned to the streets as the opposition stepped up its push for reforms at the electoral commission ahead of the repeat presidential election.

They staged demos in Nairobi, Kisumu, Kakamega and Mombasa on Friday morning, heeding the call of the leaders to protest twice a week— on Mondays and Fridays.

In Kisumu, transport was paralysed along Kisumu-Kakamega highway after hundreds of youths barricaded the road at Kondele.

Nairobi was relatively peaceful throughout the day as police and protesters did not engage in any running battles.
