NASA Protesters Facing Life Imprisonment

Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has warned that National Super Alliance (NASA) demonstrators who destroy water infrastructure could face between five years to life imprisonment.

Speaking after flagging off 30 water trucks and bowsers to the arid and semi-arid regions, Wamalwa stated that life imprisonment applies where the offence is committed with the “intent to endanger life."

The CS further stated that in other instances, anyone who destroys infrastructure is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.

Wamalwa’s announcement comes after protestors calling for electoral reforms broke a water hydrant along Oginga Odinga Street in Kisumu town on Friday.

The protestors who complained of the scorching sun enjoyed a bath from the sprinkling water.

This caused the Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (Kiwasco) to shut down most of its supply lines to avoid wastage of water.

The protestors also broke into Tumaini where they ate food and took off with some goods.

Some of the supermarket's employees who tried to stop the protesters from gaining access to the premise sustained injuries in the process.

Seven people were arrested in connection with the incident and will be arraigned on Monday.

On Sunday, NASA flag bearer Raila Odinga asked leaders from Kisumu County to hold ‘structured demonstrations’ to avoid violence and looting.

The opposition chief also ordered all leaders to be present during the demonstrations and ensure that they control the protestors.
