Duale Reveals Raila's Big Mistake

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has spoken out on NASA leader Raila Odinga's withdrawal from the Presidential election, revealing what he believes is a mistake by the former Prime Minister.

In a series of tweets, Duale stated that Mr Odinga had not followed the laid-down procedure in withdrawing his candidature ahead of the October 26th election.

He noted that the Opposition leader had not filled in a Form 24A to give official notice of the withdrawal.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had earlier confirmed receipt of a letter from Mr Odinga notifying the body of his withdrawal.

Duale cited the High Court ruling made by Judge John Mativo that included Thirdway Alliance candidate Ekuru Aukot in the fresh polls as further complicating Odinga's plans.

He noted that since the former Premier's withdrawal was based on the 2013 Supreme Court ruling that limited the contestants to the petitioner and the winner of the nullified election.

However, Justice Mativo noted that the October 26 election is not a re-run but a fresh poll which should include all candidates who vied in the August exercise.

The Opposition leaders on Tuesday announced that they had withdrawn their candidature from the repeat election.

Mr Odinga stated: "It is only through this withdrawal that the country will have a free and fair election as per the law."

His running mate Kalonzo Musyoka added: "We have come to the conclusion that there is no intention on the part of the IEBC to undertake any changes to its operations and personnel to ensure that the “illegalities and irregularities” that led to the invalidation of the 8th August do not happen again."

The Alliance has further announced that nationwide demonstrations to call for electoral reforms will take place daily from Monday next week.
